Sunnylands is the focus of Aaron Seward’s article in this month’s Texas Architect. In this very well executed issue, which focuses on daylight and design, Seward offers an investigation of the Center and Gardens and its use of daylight.  The article highlights the complex and handsome treatment of color and light in the spaces, especially with regard to its inspirations in the late impressionist paintings of Cezanne and Van Gogh.

Coincidentally, OJB found itself involved in many of the projects included in this issue on light: the opening article frames Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute, an emblem of structure and light, and the contract for whose landscape originally brought OJB to California in 2003.

Also included is an article about artist James Turrell, whose “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace installation/pavilion at Rice University in Houston OJB helped create, assisting with the detailing of the turf structure below the roof.
