Woodchase Park in Houston Opens to the Public

City and park officials and jubilant neighbors gathered together to celebrate the dedication and opening of Woodchase Park in the Westchase district of Houston. The fully staffed and fully programmed community park is the result of a years-long effort to bring new public open space to one of the city’s most park-poor neighborhoods.

A dynamic listening and engagement process, with residents at its center, helped to define and refine how the park could be used. Park planners and landscape architects from OJB’s Houston office translated the wants and needs of the community into the design of a 1.75-acre park that will be a locus for year-round play, arts and culture, classes, and seasonal events. The neighborhood park is located within walking distance of more than 10,000 residents, and connects to the Westchase Trail, expanding public open space options for this community. Planted rain gardens and native and adaptive planting characterize the Texas landscape, allowing for the landscape change with the seasons and provide year-round interest and sensory delight.
