The long-awaited design for Freedom Plaza in New York, recently unveiled by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and OJB, has been published widely in the design and general press. Hailed for its responsive collection of built and open spaces that include housing, hospitality, cultural and entertainment programs, the heart of the project is a 4.77-acre public park.

Offering sweeping views of the city and the waterfront, the public park embodies universal goals for openness and equity. Conceived as a sustainable, urban commons, the park is a place where memory and place are intimately tied together. The lush green oasis is sustainably grounded with high performance systems for stormwater and native planting that celebrate the region’s ecological legacy. The entire development is planned for net zero carbon with a host of sustainable site measures to improve the urban park experience.

Founder Jim Burnett noted, “We were inspired by New York’s great contrasts of nature and the city and the idea of extending green space all the way to the water’s edge. While the park is expansive in its own right, the sweeping visual connections of sky, water and buildings act as a canvas across three dimensions, enveloping people and nature into a memorable composition that is uniquely New York.”
