US correspondent Ellen Eberhardt of Dezeen visits Kyle Fiddelke, FASLA, who shares the story of how three underutilized parks stretched across 72-acres in downtown Omaha have been transformed. The new urban composition, reimagined as The RiverFront, now connect people from the downtown core and the Old Market district to the water’s edge of the Missouri River for the first time in generations.
Kyle recounts how a master plan addressed long-term ecological and activation issues to breathe new life into the trio of parks. The ensemble of highly programmed spaces brings back recreational, cultural events, family-friendly activities and more to people throughout the region. The park has been recognized with a host of awards for its success, including a 2024 ULI Open Space Award, Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Award for urban design, and a Planet Positive Award for its comprehensive sustainability framework.
