Conceived as a public art installation, Playa Vista Central Park is organized into a sequence of discrete landscape experiences unified by a central spine with linear bands of rich, native planting.
Part of the historic Howard Hughes campus, Playa Vista offers a 9-acre tapestry of public open spaces in the urban core. The park is structured around a function lawn and performance pavilion, surrounded by bosques of shade trees. West of the lawn are sports courts, a playground, a soccer field, botanical gardens, water features, and a band shell. An immersive berm garden east of the green is composed of bold installations of southern California plant material. The berm gardens at the center of the site create an immersive landscape experience.
A rhythm is established across the assemblage of spaces that pairs sports-intensive activity areas with quieter spaces which encourage lingering, such as botanical gardens and water features. Wide bands of specimen plantings are arranged in bold, vertical swaths that provide exuberant color and movement throughout the seasons.
”A central nine-acre park consisting of sports courts, playground, soccer field, botanical gardens, water features, and a bandshell, serves as the social hub for the campus.
”Deep color and textures characterize the resilient plant palette, which shines in the temperature Mediterranean climate.
